What is Patched?

Patched is a unified chat client that brings all your communities into one place. Instead of switching between Discord, Slack, Telegram, and other platforms, Patched lets you manage all your servers and conversations from a single app.

Key Concepts

  • Servers — Community spaces with channels, roles, and members. Think of them as your home base.
  • Channels — Organized spaces within a server for text, voice, streaming, forums, docs, and more.
  • Groups — Visual tabs to organize channels into logical sections (like game teams, departments, etc.).
  • Direct Messages — Private 1-on-1 conversations outside of servers.

What Makes Patched Different

Patched is built with cross-platform bridging at its core. Your identity, messages, and presence sync across connected platforms. A message sent on Discord shows up in Patched, and vice versa.

Patched is available as a web app and a native desktop app for macOS and Windows.

  • Main Content — Chat messages, voice view, forums, docs, or server overview depending on the channel type.
  • Member List (right) — Online and offline members. Toggle with the members button in the top bar.

Groups (Tabs)

If a server uses groups, you'll see tabs above the channel list. Click a tab to filter channels for that group. Each group can have its own categories and channels.

Quick Actions

  • Right-click channels for rename, delete, clone, permissions, and more.
  • Right-click messages for edit, delete, pin, reply, and reactions.
  • Use the search button in the top bar to search messages in the current channel.

Channels

Channels are the core of every Patched server. Each channel type serves a different purpose.

Channel Types

  • Text — Standard chat channels for messaging, files, GIFs, and reactions.
  • Voice — Real-time voice communication with rooms, broadcasting, and screen sharing.
  • Streaming — Stream from OBS via RTMP or embed external streams (YouTube, Twitch).
  • Announcement — Important messages that can be cross-posted.
  • Forum — Threaded discussions with topics and replies.
  • Docs — Collaborative document channels.
  • Media — Image and video gallery channels.

Creating a Channel

  1. Click the + button next to a category header in the sidebar.
  2. Choose a channel type from the type picker.
  3. Enter a name and optional description.
  4. Click Create.

Drag and drop channels in the sidebar to reorder them. Drop onto a category header to move a channel into that category.

Voice Chat

Patched voice chat uses peer-to-peer WebRTC for low-latency, high-quality audio.

Joining Voice

Click any voice channel in the sidebar to join. Your avatar will appear in the channel and the voice controls bar will show at the bottom of the screen.

Voice Controls

  • Mute — Toggle your microphone on/off.
  • Deafen — Mute all incoming audio (also mutes your mic).
  • Screen Share — Share your screen with everyone in the channel.
  • Disconnect — Leave the voice channel.

Voice Rooms

Voice channels can have multiple rooms (sub-channels). Rooms let you split a voice channel into separate audio spaces.

  1. Right-click a voice channel and select Add Sub-Channel.
  2. Name your room and it appears under the voice channel in the sidebar.
  3. Click a room to join it. Use the Join button in the voice view to switch rooms.

Broadcasting

Broadcast mode lets you talk to all rooms in a voice channel simultaneously. Perfect for announcements during raids, meetings, or events.

Whisper

Hold a whisper hotkey to privately talk to a specific user without others hearing.

← Back to guides

Streaming

Streaming channels let you broadcast live content to your server.

Stream from OBS (RTMP)

  1. Open a streaming channel and click Stream URL.
  2. Choose Get PATCHED URL — this generates a unique RTMP URL and stream key.
  3. In OBS, go to Settings → Stream → Service: Custom.
  4. Paste the Server URL and Stream Key.
  5. Click "Start Streaming" in OBS — your stream appears live in the channel.

Embed External Streams

Click Stream URLSet Stream URL to paste a YouTube or Twitch embed URL. The stream will be embedded directly in the channel.

RTMP streaming requires port 1935 to be accessible. If you're self-hosting, ensure your firewall allows this port.

Roles & Permissions

Roles define what members can do in your server. Patched uses a Guilded-style tri-state permission system.

Creating Roles

  1. Open Server Settings → Roles.
  2. Click Create Role and enter a name and color.
  3. The role editor shows all permissions in a split layout.

Tri-State Permissions

Each permission has three states:

  • ✕ Deny — Explicitly blocks the permission.
  • ○ Default — Inherits from the base role.
  • ✓ Allow — Explicitly grants the permission.

Permission Categories

  • General — Manage server, manage channels, manage roles, kick/ban members.
  • Text — Send messages, manage messages, embed links, attach files, use reactions.
  • Voice — Connect, speak, mute members, deafen members.
  • Advanced — Administrator (full access), manage webhooks, manage groups.

Channel Permissions

Right-click a channel → Permissions to set per-channel overrides. These take priority over server-wide role permissions.

← Back to guides

Groups & Categories

Groups

Groups appear as tabs above the channel sidebar. They let you organize channels into high-level sections — like game teams, departments, or topics.

  1. Open Server Settings → Groups+ New Group.
  2. Name your group and pick a color.
  3. Right-click channels → Move to Group to assign them.

Categories

Categories organize channels within a group (or ungrouped). They appear as collapsible headers in the sidebar.

  2. Name your category.
  3. Drag channels under the category header, or right-click → Move to Category.
Click a category header to collapse/expand it. Great for keeping your sidebar clean.

Invites & Guest Access

Server Invites

Any server member can create invite links. Go to Server Settings → InvitesNew Invite. Share the link — anyone who clicks it joins your server.

Channel-Specific Invites

Right-click a voice channel → Invite to Channel. This creates a link that targets that specific voice channel. When someone clicks it:

  • If Guest Voice Access is off: They join the server and auto-navigate to the voice channel.
  • If Guest Voice Access is on: They join just the voice channel without becoming a server member. They see a minimal voice-only interface.

Room-Specific Invites

Right-click a voice room → Invite to Room to create a link that targets a specific room within a voice channel.

Enabling Guest Voice Access

  1. Open Server Settings → Overview.
  2. Check Guest voice access.
  3. Save — channel-specific invites now allow guest voice joins.
Guest users can hear and speak in voice, but they cannot see any other channels, messages, or members in the server.

Custom Server Emotes

Server owners and admins can upload custom emotes via Server Settings > Emotes. Emotes must be PNG, GIF, or WebP format, under 1MB, and max 256x256 pixels. Once uploaded, anyone in the server can use them by typing :emote_name: in messages.

Reactions

React to any message by hovering over it and clicking the reaction icon, or right-clicking and selecting "React." The reaction picker also has General, Server, and My Emotes tabs with search. Click an existing reaction pill to add your vote to it.

Verification

What is Verification?

Verified accounts display a blue checkmark next to their username, confirming the user's identity as a content creator, business, public figure, or notable individual. This helps the community identify authentic accounts.

How to Request Verification

  1. Go to User Settings > Verification.
  2. Fill in your real name or organization name.
  3. Select your proof type (social media, website, business, press, or government ID).
  4. Provide a URL or reference to verify your identity.
  5. Explain why you should be verified.
  6. Submit your request.

Review Process

The Patched team reviews all verification requests. You'll see your request status (Pending, Approved, or Denied) in the Verification panel. If denied, you may resubmit with additional information.

End-to-End Encryption

How It Works

Patched uses AES-256-GCM encryption with ECDH P-256 key exchange to protect your messages. All encryption and decryption happens on your device — the server never sees your plaintext messages.

Encryption Indicators

  • Lock icon — A small lock icon appears next to the timestamp on encrypted messages.
  • E2E badge — The channel header shows an "E2E" badge when encryption is active.

Key Management

Your encryption keys are generated automatically on first login and protected by your password. Each conversation (channel or DM) has its own encryption key that's shared with all members.

Important Notes

  • Encrypted messages cannot be searched by the server.
  • If you reset your password, historical encrypted messages may become unreadable.
  • New members joining a channel receive keys from existing members.
← Back to guides

Moderation

Moderation Tools

Right-click any member in a server to access moderation actions:

  • Kick — Remove a member from the server (they can rejoin with an invite).
  • Ban — Permanently ban a member from the server.
  • Mute — Prevent a member from speaking in voice or text.
  • Set Nickname — Change a member's display name in the server.
  • Block — Block a user from sending you DMs.

Reports

Right-click a user and select "Report" to file a report. Reports include categories like harassment, spam, NSFW, hate speech, threats, and impersonation. Server moderators can review reports in Server Settings > Reports.

Audit Log

Track all administrative actions in Server Settings > Audit Log. The log records role changes, channel modifications, kicks, bans, and other moderation events.

Bans Management

View and manage banned users in Server Settings > Bans. Admins can unban users from this panel.

← Back to guides

Bots & Webhooks

Custom Bots

Create bots for your server via Server Settings > Bots. Each bot gets a unique token for API access. Bots can send messages, react to events, and interact with channels programmatically.

Webhooks

Set up webhooks in Server Settings > Webhooks to receive external notifications in your channels. Each webhook provides a URL that external services can POST to, automatically delivering messages to the specified channel.

Automation Flows

Create automated workflows in Server Settings > Flows. Flows trigger on events (message sent, user joined, etc.) and perform actions like sending messages, assigning roles, or posting in channels. Use timers for recurring automated tasks.
